We drove to Madison, Wisconsin first where my lovely sister and her family lives. I haven't seen her kids for two years and it was so good to be able to visit. They have gotten so big! Maddie and Valerie got their ears pierced while I was there and Maddie was extremely excited. She can't wait till she can wear "peacock earrings". She was nice enough to share her room with Lucy and put up with her 4 year old buggings for five days.
My sister has two younger boys that are 7 and 4 and right around Lucy's and Isak's age. They played really well together and had a lot of fun running around and playing.
The zoo is Madison is a FREE zoo and its pretty amazing. We spent an afternoon there and it was very hot but the kids didn't seem too bothered by it.
The chimps there can get very aggressive and have been known to throw themselves against the glass repeatedly when they get agitated. We made sure to maintain a safe distance. I think the heat made the animals more aggressive than usual as well.
They had a fun carousel and a very cool giant climbing/playground structure that we played on for a while before heading home.
My sister's backyard is pretty awesome. She has bunnies running all over all the time as well as a sandbox and a gated garden. As well as a hammock that the kids liked to sit in.
These are my sister's four kids. She had a birthday while I was there and I took some pictures of her kids while she was gone and put them up on her wall. They were more than happy to pose for me.
Madison has gorgeous bike/running trails all over and we took a walk one morning along one. It just got so hot so fast we didn't last very long. The kids brought their scooters and were able to use those for most of the trail. Valerie and I ran a few times while I was there but mostly at night when it was fairly bearable. We also went to this place called the Dig N Save where they sell clothes by the pound that haven't sold at the local St Vincent de Paul. There's a giant room just full of bins of clothes and you have to dig through everything. The best part is that they weigh your shopping cart on this giant scale when you check out. We got a heaping shopping cart full of clothes for $40. Pretty awesome.
We went to the splash park one day that also had a giant park next to it. The person who started American Dolls is from Madison area and has donated quite a few things to the community. This playground was donated from his family as well.
Valerie and I and one of her friends went out for her birthday while I was there. We went to the downtown city art museum and it was so nice to be able to walk around and look at exhibits and read without little kids pulling on me. Valerie and I went running Saturday morning and intended to go a ways but experienced the most crazy rain storm I've ever ran in. To the point my shoes were squishy and I couldn't see because there was so much water. So we just went 7 miles and called it good, it was beautiful scenery and nice to run where there is so much green!
I tried to get a picture of all the kids while I was there for my parents but it was a bit difficult....
They have a children's museum there that we've gotten to go to every time we visit my sister. Its the coolest place and the kids love all the stuff there.
There were chickens to see on the roof along with baby mice and hamsters. There is a water room and a giant art room and tons of legos and a giant kid sized hamster wheel. Benefits of living in a big city!
We left my sisters Saturday evening and made the 7 hour drive to Kevin's brother's in Michigan. We had so much fun and I'm hoping I can talk my sister into driving to see us next summer.

Giant Crazy Road Trip (ie what the heck were we thinking) Part 1.
Kevin and I decided a while ago to make a big roadtrip this summer to see our families. My sister and her family lives in Wisconsin and Kevin's brother lives in Michigan. We've never driven out that way before and it has been a few years since we have seen them. And since we have a giant car that can more than accommodate our family and all our stuff, we decided to try it out. I was a little nervous about the driving, Edyn is still little and I was mostly worried about how she would do. I over prepared and made binders, games, packed way too much stuff and didn't use half of it but I felt ready for anything! We decided to use as many Costco's as possible while driving to get our gas and we also used it on quite a few occasions for cheap lunches. I think Kevin and I don't want Costco pizza for a long, long time.
The next day we made it to Jamestown, ND which apparently is home of the buffalo. We found a nice motel in the middle of town that also had a little slide and the kids were able to play for a while. We got to take our time on the way to Wisconsin, about 3 1/2 days of driving, because Kevin had a breakfast appointment in Minneapolis on Monday.
Our kids did pretty well on the way there and we made sure to stop every few hours and let them stretch and run. Isak would often run laps around the rest areas until it was time to leave.
We also got to read lots of great information about the local areas (not much in North Dakota, FYI) at these places and learned some cool stuff. I packed lots of bread, PB, and honey and we sometimes stopped at parks and had lunch as well. The kids loved this and I didn't have to worry about them picking up weird viruses from nasty play place equipment although we had stopped at a few of those as well. It was also on this trip that Edyn learned a new scream that we have fondly named the "banshee" yell, it can peel paint off the walls. And lucky for us, she not only uses it when she wants out of the car, but when she wants our attention as well. So. Awesome.
Day 1 we made it to Billings, Montana which was our goal and stayed at a slightly ghetto but incredibly fun hotel that had a waterslide. I think the kids and I went down it at least 20 times and this turned out to be our favorite hotel of our whole trip. There was no height limit and the kids could go down by themselves and they thought it was the best thing ever.
It made me feel better about locking them in the car for 10 plus hours that first day and made for a pretty fun night.
The breakfast was pretty good too and Isak became an expert at continental breakfasts.
We were in a hurry to leave Sunday morning but Isak convinced us to go visit the buffalo museum. So glad I listened to him because this was a pretty cool site! Its about 60 tons of fiberglass and is surrounded by a buffalo reserve and you can see buffalo roaming around.
On Sunday we made it to Minneapolis, after being slowed down by crazy traffic, and toured around
the mall of America. It had a giant Nickolodeon land in the middle of it complete with theme park and roller coaster. We also walked through the lego store which was amazing and had tables of legos all over for kids to play with. It had these huge lego sculptures on top of the store and a floor to ceiling wall of every color of Lego you an imagine. Other than that, it was just a giant shopping mall and I wasn't super impressed. Probably would've been more fun without three very hungry, tired, and whiny kids!
We stayed in a hotel right by the mall and it had an amazing water park inside. I noticed a ton of hotels out that way have poolside rooms that open out onto the indoor pool. You can pay like $10 extra to have one of these rooms and have immediate access to the pool. We never did it and I imagine with little kids it might drive me crazy to have them begging to go out the door to the pool constantly.
Our kids did pretty well on the way there and we made sure to stop every few hours and let them stretch and run. Isak would often run laps around the rest areas until it was time to leave.

Kindergarten Graduation
Isak graduated from Kindergarten the beginning of June. They had this sign hanging outside and I could hardly believe it. 2025?? Wow! They wore little caps and sang a few songs and then gave them their certificates.
It was really cute and Isak did great. He had a really good first year of school and we loved his teacher. He learned so much and has really taken off with his reading. We are so proud of him!
After the graduation we took him to our local ice cream store and he got his own smoothie. Pretty great day!
